What is the difference between the occupation of Airline Pilots/Copilots and Commercial Pilots?
Filed Under Financial Services | Comments Off
I have been looking into both of these careers. They seem so similar, but the paycheck differs greatly. Commercial pilots make only half as much as the airline pilots, but aren’t commercial pilots flying for airlines? Also, what is the training needed? After being involved for many years in the air force, would one be allowed to be hired for an airline occupation?

Finding a Decent Commercial Pilot School
Filed Under Business | Comments Off
Finding a decent commercial pilot school is not very difficult to do. There are many reputable programs that are available that will provide the necessary commercial pilot training to be a successful pilot. When it comes to the initial search, you will probably run into a wide range of commercial pilot training programs. However, not every commercial pilot school will have the specific training that you need to fly commercial. With that in mind, it is best to make that your first question when looking at a new school.
A good commercial pilot school will be able to take any ordinary type of person and make them a commercial pilot. Training to fly commercially will enable anyone to take classes and get the training in a short amount of time. This will also make it easier to go through the specific training that it takes to become a commercial pilot as opposed to a regular one. This type of pilot training will train you directly to fly certain types of planes and to handle specific situations that are not learned outside of commercial pilot school.
There are many things that are also important to consider when applying for any commercial pilot school. In order to become a pilot, you have to be able to learn quickly, think on your toes in the event of an emergency, in addition to knowing the basic and safety features of an airplane. Furthermore, it is important to receive the commercial pilot training that qualifies you to transport passengers. There are several other specifications that are helpful in getting you the training that is necessary to fly commercially. In addition to the passengers, you will also be responsible for going through the training of communicating with other planes, landing fields, etc. these are important considerations to think about in the search for commercial pilot training.

is it true that they work less than 100 hours a month?… where as other professions… one works 42 a week… which is around 160 hours or so a month…. it doest make sense… how do they make a living working such low amount of hours? And what is duty time? and does it apply to ALL commercial pilots, and not just airline pilots? does that increase the amount of hours worked for the entire month?
I just find this very confusing…
Thank you for your time and help… I do appreciate it.

Reunited Stone Temple Pilots Rock Vancouver’s Foxfest
Filed Under Music | Comments Off
With their controversial, creative and innovative style, the Stone Temple Pilots truly symbolize what it means to be rock stars. The band first formed in San Diego in 1987 under the name Mighty Joe Young. They would go on to change their name to Stone Temple Pilots in the early nineties before releasing their breakthrough album, Core.
Core was STP’s first hit in the mainstream music scene and gained them not only attention among fans, but critical acclaim and impressive album sales as well. Core featured a slew of hits, which would define the band, including *** Type Thing, Plush, Wicked Garden and Creep. STP followed Core with 1994’s Purple, an album which would eventually become number one on the pop charts. Purple diversified the group’s style and gained them further respect from both the rock and pop communities, with hits like Vasoline and Interstate Love Song.
Despite a steady stream of success throughout the 1990’s, with several more hit albums and numerous singles, the band would break up in 2003 due to personal differences. The breakup, caused by tension within STP, led to lead singer Scott Weiland forming Velvet Revolver with members of Guns N’ Roses and the rest of the band joining Richard Patrick of Filter to form Army of Anyone.
While both Weiland and his former band-mates achieved moderate success in their respective outside projects, in 2008, news broke that the Stone Temple Pilots are to reunite for a new album and reunion tour, lasting from May to November, 2008. The tour, which will play in various Canadian and American venues, is anticipated to be one of the biggest, best and highest grossing of the year.
As part of the tour, the Stone Temple Pilots are scheduled to headline Foxfest in Vancouver. Foxfest, a massive festival run by local Vancouver radio station 99.3 The Fox, is set to take place in General Motors Place on August 30, 2008. Foxfest will be the last of five total Canadian stops on STP’s North American reunion tour.

Pilot License
Filed Under Sports And Fitness | Comments Off
The airplane is the nearest thing to animate life that man has created. In the air a machine ceases indeed to be a mere piece of mechanism; it becomes animate and is capable not only of primary guidance and control, but actually of expressing a pilot’s temperament.
— Sir Ross Smith, K.B.E., ‘National Geographic Magazine,’ March 1921.
There are many kinds of pilot licenses that you can receive. This book primarily deals with private pilot licenses and certifications. Pilot licenses are issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA.) They are divided into two categories:
certificates and training. A certificate defines the various levels of flying privileges that the pilot has earned. A rating defines the various categories and classes of aircraft in which the pilot may exercise the privileges of their certificate.
Certificates are:
Student pilot
Sport pilot
Recreational pilot
Private pilot
Commercial pilot
Airline transport pilot
Flight instructor
Ratings primarily refer to commercial pilots, airline transport pilots, flight instructors, and private pilots. Some of the ratings that a pilot can receive are:
Airplane – single-engine land
Airplane – single-engine sea
Airplane – multi-engine land
Instrument
Glider
Rotorcraft or helicopter

Sport Pilot Licenses
The exhilaration of flying is too keen, the pleasure too great, for it to be neglected as a sport.
— Orville Wright
Sport pilots fly smaller and lighter planes. The idea is to enable a pilot to fly a light, small plane for pleasure. To fly as a sport pilot, you have to get a sport pilot license which consists of 20 hours of flight time, getting a medical examiner’s
certificate, and passing a knowledge test.
A sport pilot license allows you to fly for pleasure. It does not teach you how to fly into an air traffic control strip at a busy airport like Chicago O’Hara or New York’s La Guardia airport. Many private pilots flying around today though primarily fly planes as sport pilots do and hence do not need to have taken all the certifications and flight time which they do not use.
Sport pilots are not allowed to fly higher than 10,000 feet above sea level nor are they allowed to fly more than 2,000 feet above the ground level, whichever being higher. Sport pilots do not have to acquire the third-class medical examiner certificate.
Recreational Pilot License
The recreational pilot license was created in 1987. Unlike the sport license, the recreational pilot license has almost the same requirements as a private pilot license such as acquiring the third-class medical examiner certificate, yet with more limitations and not as many benefits. In fact, currently, there are a little over than a thousand recreational pilot licenses in use today.
A recreational pilot can not fly all the planes that a sport pilot can. A recreational pilot can fly only single-engine aircraft and helicopters, with a horsepower of 180 or less, and can only fly planes with four seaters or less. At the same time, a recreational pilot can only have one passenger.

Can someone please tell me how pilots plan their descent to their destination airport or how they plan their approach on final to land exactly on the runway threshold.
Could someone please give me an example.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You.

What feedback do fighter pilots get when their plane is damaged, and how do they know whether to abort?
Filed Under Aircraft | 3 Comments
I remember once being told a story about the design of a UK fighter plane and a US fighter plane. On the UK fighter plane, the system designers were very proud of their amazing new high technology approach. Whenever the system encountered difficulties (or damage), it would announce the problem using a synthesised voice and provide a summary of the plane’s key statistics and, most importantly, its current range. Surprise surprise, pilots hated it because they were massively overloaded with information.
The designers of the US plane took a totally different approach. The only form of feedback used by this system was a bell. The system did a bunch of calculations in the background based on various factors. If the bell didn’t sound, the mission was accomplishable. The sounding of the bell simply signified “abort mission”.
I’d like to know if this story is true, or if there is any other publicly available information out there on this subject. Thanks!
