Pilots young and old throughout the European continent need to stay sharp in their piloting skills. The flight deck can become a difficult place to work for those pilots who don’t practice, stay focused, and understand every aspect of their job. While the public may think that hours upon hours of flight experience are enough to make a great pilot, they don’t understand that taking a look at the airline industry from a different perspective is important from time to time. As well, pilots need to work on their skills outside of the flight deck in order to stay current with their licensing and certifications and prove their continued ability to safely fly airliners.

One way in which pilots can get more experience and a different perspective on their jobs is through flight simulation programs, available at flight schools and training facilities. These flight simulators range from simple computer programs to large simulators where pilots sit at a functioning control board. The reason why pilots often choose this route in their efforts to stay sharp is that it is less strenuous than actual flight and is a quick way to get some practice in between work days. As well, flight centres and training facilities are becoming more plentiful in the United Kingdom and Europe, which allows travelling pilots to test out new control configurations and flight simulators.

Another way for pilots to get some extra flight hours into their busy work schedule is to pick up some hours flying charter planes. Often, this option is best used by airline pilots that have just left an airline position, as the flight schedule can be rigorous. Charter flights allow pilots to work on smaller airplanes with fewer functions, which require pilots to be more intuitive and thoughtful in their jobs. As well, charter flights are a welcome reprieve from the pressures and rigors of the airline industry. Charter planes often carry less than twenty people, allowing a pilot the chance to speak with passengers and break away from their routine.

In any event, airline pilots need to fly extra hours for a number of reasons. Pilots need to see their positions from a different perspective, even if this requires sacrificing a bit of personal time with flight simulators. As well, pilots can always use experience in a variety of different settings to keep them on their toes. Finally, pilots need to understand the importance of their jobs to the hundreds of thousands of passengers they help travel throughout the year.

Law Enforcement Pilot as a Career

This is a question asked by many young people who one day aspire to be a pilot, or more specifically a law enforcement pilot. The standard answer you will hear, is that most police agencies “hire their pilots from within.” This is true for the most part but let’s take a closer look at this possible career choice. Another related question I see often is how much do law enforcement pilots make?

Indeed there are some agencies who hire civilian pilots. We will take a closer look at this in a future article.

First let’s look at where most of the law enforcment pilots are found in the United States. By far the vast majority are found in state and local law enforcement agencies. In other words your local police and sheriff’s department, or your state highway patrol. Yes there are a number of federal agencies who employee pilots, but the vast majority are local law enforcement agencies.

Take LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) for example. They operate approximately 18 aircraft, most of which are helicopters, and have somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 people assigned to their aviation unit. They are one of the largest law enforcement aviation units in the country, if not the largest.

I probably don’t have to tell you that the helicopter dominates the law enforcement aircraft inventory, though many agencies will operate one or two fixed wing aircraft for prisoner transports and surveillance operations. So the majority of law enforcement pilots are helicopter pilots.

The vast majority of agencies do in fact take their sworn officers and deputies, and either train them in house, or send them to flight school to obtain their helicopter pilot license. Why do they do it this way instead of just hiring people who are already pilots? Well I can’t answer for every agency, but suffice it to say that the majority do, do it this way and they have for many years.

So how long would you have to spend on the ground as a patrol officer before being able to transfer into a law enforcement air unit? This varies significantly from agency to agency. There is usually a minimum amount of time, such as 2 or 4 years, and then there is the actual time and experience you will need in order to be competetive for such a position. I know of some law enforcement officers who were able to transfer into their air units with as little as 5 or 6 years on the department.

About that pay. Most law enforcement pilots do receive a premium pay for being a pilot in the air unit. However, all you really need to do is look at the salary of a law enforcement officer on a large department with about 10 years on. This will give you a good idea of what a law enforcement pilot makes. Depending on the part of the country I would estimate most law enforcement pilots are making $60,000 to $70,000 at a minimum. Some make much more. Ultimately, law enforcement and law enforcement pilot are excellent and rewarding career choices.

I heard they need more pilots in the Middle East partially due to the fact that oil is cheaper and more abundant there. China and India also need more pilots due to their large population.

So how much do pilots in Dubai make annually? I know they have really good benefits such as health care, vacation, pension.

Is Dubai a better place to live in than China?

But with that being said, this does not mean that you should shy away from looking into this area of interest. If you stick with things long enough you will eventually work your way up to being a pilot of a major airline company.

Another career path that you may want to look into is becoming a private pilot. There are many people who need pilots to fly them around the world based off of their busy schedule. You can even start your own chartering business if you have enough interest in this line of work. Although it may take some time and money to get started, you can make much more in the long run.

Overall, there are many careers that you can follow if you are interested in becoming a pilot. You may be up against a bit of competition, but when you think about it this is the same regardless of what type of career you are interested in. The key is to find out what careers are available, and then make a decision early on as to what path you want to follow.
