How to Pilot a Homebuilt Hovercraft is Fun and Easy
Filed Under Automotive | Comments Off
Hovercrafts are modeled according to the principles applied in an aircraft. Most of its benefits are attributed to air dynamics. Although it looks like it’s floating on water as how a boat would, it’s actually floating. When it starts moving, the correct term is gliding just as a plane would glide through the air. Hence, whether it’s a homebuilt hovercraft or a commercial hovercraft vessel, the person steering the wheel is appropriately called a pilot.
Unlike maneuvering vehicles like boats or automobiles, a homebuilt hovercraft is steered as how a helicopter is piloted. The engine is usually controlled by a throttle. To maneuver, a handle that works similarly as how a joystick work is used for the rudder. This simple mechanism allows you to pilot the hovercraft with ease. At first attempt, expect it to be a little bit challenging to do.
Since hovercrafts are run via air cushion, there is no contact to the water or ground surface below. Thus there is much less friction involved. Imagine how it feels driving on ice. It’s almost like that. Piloting your homebuilt hovercraft requires a little bit of self training and skills. It also requires you to stay focused on the machine.
Here are a few of the benefits that should motivate you and help you learn to pilot a hovercraft:
- Island hopping - Yes you can do this without having to spending anything more than fuel or energy for your homebuilt hovercraft. Since this vehicle can practically fly on water surface, visiting neighboring islands won’t be any hassle.
- Hovercrafts can be piloted without license. Although there may be a license for owning a boat or vehicle of this type. It is best to consult about this.
- Your homebuilt hovercraft can practically go to water paths that are not accessible if you go by boat. Its mobility is more useful in this case. Examples of these paths are shallow bodies of water.
- It doesn’t cost much. Unlike commercial versions, this is homebuilt and you can always improvise.
- It’s easy to go fishing with a hovercraft. In winter time when you want to go fishing above thin ice, the hovercraft is a good base to sit on.
- In cases where you need to carry and move heavy cargoes or loads on flat but difficult surfaces such as mud and swamps, your homebuilt hovercraft is the ideal alternative means of transportation.
These are just some of the benefits. Many hovercraft models have even appeared on major movies. The best part about this vehicle, apart from its versatility is that it comes with design kits. You can build your own homebuilt hovercraft just by this package. No need to study physics or air dynamics. Simply enjoy building and piloting it.
Once you got the feel of piloting your own homebuilt hovercraft, you should be ready to enjoy gliding over smooth surfaces where it’s best suited for. Hovercrafts can fly over frozen lakes, snow fields, and in almost all water surfaces. It is also advisable to use the hovercraft in marshes or swamp areas and muddy grounds.

Pilots Age 60 Where Is It Now
Filed Under Travel | Comments Off
Probably one of the most contentious issues of recent times in the aviation community is the proposed changes to the age 60 rule. As most of the readers will be aware, age 60 is a mandatory retirement age for pilots involved in the part 121 airline environment. Representations and pressure groups from both ends of the age spectrum have recently been engaged in open warfare to influence the change in legislation to their specific sides benefit.
In early 2005, the republican senator for Nevada introduced a bill, HR 65, which dealt with altering the retirement age for airline pilots from 60 to 65, so as to be inline with ICAO rules. The resolution was then referred to the House Committee on Transportation and infrastructure which was chaired by Rep. Don Young. Subsequently HR 65 was then referred to the Sub Committee on Aviation which falls under the jurisdiction of the Transportation committee. There was indeed no hearings ever conducted on HR 65 nor were any recommendations tendered to the House Committee on Transportation. Thats basically where the resolution remained all through 2006 until the 109th Congress adjourned in December.
Further to the above, a bill entitled S 65 was sponsored in the Senate which was then referred to the relevant committee for consideration. On the 19th July 2005, the committee met and convened a hearing to consider the issue. Representations from many pressure groups such as, FAA, Aerospace Medical Association, Airline Pilots Association, SWAPA, Allied Pilots Association, and Jetblue Airways Corporation were heard and evaluated by the committee members. On the 17th of November the committee ruled and acquiesced to support the change to mirror the ICAO regulations. Following the above procedure, the bill was released from committee and placed upon the Senate Legislative Calendar.
This is the point that many bills perish before even making it to the floor as the responsibility lays with the Senate Majority leader to determine which bills are addressed by the that session of the Senate. The Senate Majority Leader, Senator Frist never determined a date for the hearing of the bill and that is where the bill remained until perishing with the adjournment of the 109th Congress.
However, due to the election the money bill was never voted upon and therefore ceased when the 109th congress adjourned in December 2006. Rather than pass these appropriations bills congress choose to pass a continuing resolution which allowed the federal government to fund their agencies until Feb 15th, 2007.
So as it stands, the amendments remain within the appropriations bill and must be addressed by the 110th Congress whether individually or rolled up into a single bill called an omnibus bill. As the balance of power in Congress has changed its unlikely that the Democrat led Senate would choose to keep any controversial amendments in the appropriations bill lest it cause the delay of federal funding for their agencies. Having said that, there is tremendous pressure from both sides of the age divide to influence the proceedings.
It’s difficult to argue with the plight of the lower end of the seniority list, having been restricted from the usual career progression by a number of factors including 911 and the vicious airline bankruptcies. Any change to the age 60 rule would surely delay their captain upgrades by at least 5 years and cost untold thousands in lost career earnings. The alternative side of the argument is that age 60 is discriminatory and that pilots may very well be medically capable of pursuing the left seat until age 65.
Irrespective of your viewpoint, it is imperative that ALPA brings all pilots, regardless of seniority, together on this issue. As surely a hotbed issue such as this will only be detrimental to any alliance that currently exists between the different pilot groups and airline management most definitely does not require another issue to play wedge politics with.

After I graduate from college with a major in something unrelated to piloting, how could I become an airline pilot? Would I have to go to a school full time somewhere for 4 more years or would I just have to go to school for like a year and have lots of flight time in training?
Any information is helpful. Thanks!

i’m 26 yrs old and never finished college. i have 1 yr under my belt. started working making pretty good money halfway through college and unwisely dropped out and started working full-time. i’ve been thinking about this alot lately and want to become a pilot which was my dream in middle/high school but never went through with it because people around me was very discouraging about doing that. they said i should just get a “traditional” job and live happily ever after. but now that i’m older, i really want go through with it and hopefully become a pilot.
what are the requirements? BA a must? just pilot school? also requirements within commercial airlines and private.
thanks.
i was reading previous questions that people posted here on Yahoo and so far i gathered that a degree is not a MUST, but HIGHLY recommended. i’m guessing that i wouldn’t be much of a candidate if the time actually comes and i interview with a major airline, they would choose someone with a degree than not, is that accurate?
in the real world, would i be able to get any decent paying pilot job without a degree?

Pilots Could Improve Near Vision
Filed Under Health | Comments Off
adio eye treatment now ready, pilots can now avail the opprtunity of correcting near vision. US pilots who are considering having conductive keratoplasty to improve their vision may now do so without losing their aeromedical certification for flying. First, before considering CK, the pilot should check with the employer (if employed by the airlines) or flight medical examiner to determine if CK is an appropriate treatment option and if post-CK vision meets their individual requirements for flying.
In 2004, Refractec’s NearVision CK became the leading nonlaser refractive procedure in the US and is the fastest growing vision procedure since the introduction of LASIK. To date, more than 125, 000 CK treatments have been performed worldwide and more than 800 physicians are certified to perform NearVision CK.
NearVision CK uses radiofrequency energy, instead of a laser, to reshape the cornea. There is no cutting and no removal of tissue. The procedure takes less than three minutes and is done in-office with only topical (eye drop) anesthesia. In FDA studies, 98 percent of patients could see J5 (magazine and newspaper size print) following the procedure and 87 percent could read J3 or phonebook-sized print.
NearVision CK is performed using a probe thinner than a strand of hair that releases radiofrequency energy. Applied to the cornea in a circular pattern, the radio waves shrink small areas of collagen to create a constrictive band (like the tightening of a belt) that increases the curvature of the cornea, bringing near vision back into focus.
“Certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a vision correction procedure for pilots validates the safety and value of CK as a refractive treatment,” said Mitchell B Campbell, president of Refractec, Inc. “Only the safest and most effective procedures obtain an FAA protocol, and we are thrilled that pilots can now enjoy the benefits of NearVision CK.”
NearVision CK is indicated for the temporary improvement of near vision in emmetropic presbyopes (those who require only reading glasses) and hyperopic presbyopes (those who require reading and distance glasses).
If found applicable, pilots all over the world will greatly benefit in near future.
