What is the difference between the occupation of Airline Pilots/Copilots and Commercial Pilots?

I have been looking into both of these careers. They seem so similar, but the paycheck differs greatly. Commercial pilots make only half as much as the airline pilots, but aren’t commercial pilots flying for airlines? Also, what is the training needed? After being involved for many years in the air force, would one be allowed to be hired for an airline occupation?
